From an initial supply of 4653 tons in 2009, Palesa increased to a total sales volume of 2182 413 tons in 2017.
From an initial supply of 360 000 tons per annum, Mbali had a total sales volume of 818 072 in 2017.
Located 37km north of Bronkhorstspruit, Palesa forms part of the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality and borders Nkangala Township within the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. Palesa was granted the mining rights over portions of the farm Loopspruit 435 JR by the Department of Mineral Resources in June 2008. Production began in 2009 with the initial supply of 4 653 tons to Eskom. In March 2010, Palesa signed an eight-year contract to supply 160 000 tons of coal p/m to Eskom and in April, an additional 30 000 tons was negotiated. In 2014, the Department of Minerals and Resources granted another mining right over portions of the farms Rooipoort 440 JR.

As per our social and labour plan (SLP) Palesa is committed to employing locally. Through our tender processes we ensure that local black entrepreneurs are aware and benefit from the opportunities generated by our mining activities.
Mbali (formerly Klippoortjie) is an opencast mine located 11km southeast of Ogies. The mining rights over portions of the farm Klippoortjie 32 IS was granted on 26 June 2008 and in 2013 the colliery supplied coal to export and local markets. In 2014, an offtake agreement for export quality coal (RB1) was signed with one of the world’s major trading companies to supply a minimum of 360 000 tons per annum. From an initial supply of 2968 tons Mbali had a total sales volume of 818 072 in 2017. (up from , Mbali sold 419 756 tons of A-grade coal, 339 391 tons of middlings coal and 58 924 tons of 5-seam metallurgical coal, ending with total sales volumes of 818 072 (up from 607 669 tons sold in the previous year). Most of the increase in profitability can be attributed to the overall beneficiation yield.
